2 Years of blogging

Well.. there's not much to say. This blog was started 2 years ago as p1frate.blogspot.com.

It started as a non-purpose mobile blog when I got my Sony Ericsson P1i.
It did evolve a lot, changing it's purpose, looks and name.

Happy Bday!

How To Make Cheap SEO on the App Store

Talking about idiots.. I didn't expect this crisis to be so severe. Everyone's trying to sell their crap and sniff some extra cash out of it...
Like these Kaufcom GmbH guys and their Hot Girls application for iPhone.

Looking throught what they offer.. I saw many such kind of 'hot' application. First of all, I can't imagine how this garbage gets approved by Apple, but this is another story. Second... I'm really curious about how many idiots bought this... with those €0.79 you'd better buy yourself a popsicle, all you wankers out there!

Anyway if you will search the App Store for The Sims, Alarm Clock, Flight Simulation, Brushes, Torch, Asphalt Racing, GPS, City, Weather, Camera, Mafia Wars, Navigator, Flickr, Facebook, Playboy etc. you will most probably end up stumbling upon one of these crap applications.

And congratulations, Apple, for approving all this smelly stuff.

Lousy Headphones

I need a new pair of Sennheiser headphones for my iPod -> eBay, of course

Who's the idiot that's going to pay $30 for shipping only?! WTF!!
What strategy is this dude?! You won't sell anything and finally you'll die and go to hell!

BustedTees Fail

Typos from ads, newsletters etc make me sick. It just gives them an unprofessional touch that retains me from buying/using the thing.
See this "Michael Jackon T-Shirt Presale" from BustedTees and not to mention the print sucks..
FAIL!

WorldMate for iPhone

Finally... WorldMate is back for me and it's here to stay! Since I switched to iPhone, one of the regrets was the unavailability of WorldMate, wich I was using on the Sony Ericsson P1i.
There are many travel apps available for the iPhone, but still none can reach the high standards and accuracy of WorldMate.
The only downside of the app is it's price - €31,99, but looking on the bright side... this brings you a one year gold membership at the WorldMate service.
Here's what's exciting about it:
  • Itinerary manager - flights, hotels, car rentals, business meetings
  • Automated Flight Updates (I'm sure push notifications will do the job)
  • Flight status lookups
  • Flight schedules search
  • Maps & directions
  • Weather forecasts
  • World clocks
  • Currency converter
  • Travel dashboard
  • Online travel planner
  • Priority customer support
  • Ad free

available for download on the App Store

UPDATE 28.06.2009
It seems that the guys at MobiMate got the point about the ridiculous price, so they did some adjustments:
  • WorldMate Gold is now €15,99 (yes, that's a full one year GOLD membership)
  • WorldMate is available for download for free (no automated flight updates, no flight status lookups within the app, no priority support and it has ads)
UPDATE 28.07.2009
Push notifications are here!!

iPhone Message Preview in OS 3.0

Probably one of the most exciting features for me in iPhone's new OS 3.0 is the ability to toggle message preview on/off.
That crap was so annoying and it was one of the things that kept me from getting an iPhone from the beginning. Though it's just a tiny detail comparing to cut/copy/paste, push notifications etc, Apple enabled this feature 2 years after the initial iPhone release...

CNN #fail

While looking up some news about Air France's missing flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris I stumbled upon a video report on CNN's website.

Fail, big time fail! Rio de Janeiro is not there on the minimap, not even Fernando de Noronha is there. Fail, fail, fail!

The Sims 3 for iPhone Review

I'm not a fan of the Sims series, but I was eagerly waiting for this iPhone version to get on the App Store. I downloaded the thingie first thing in the morning the day it got out, june 2nd.
Once you get familiar with the appearance and with the controls, wich is pretty easy, the game gets really addictive.
Before starting the game, you get to customize the looks of your Sim. Haircuts, skin colours, clothes, shoes are not so many to chose from, but still... you get some decent options.
Then you get to choose the soft skills for your Sim... shy, potato couch, gets bored quickly, good sense of humor etc.
The graphics look pretty good, the surrounding neighbourhood looks friendly and the other Sims look nice.

The Sims' personalities will help them think about weird and wonderful desires, which you can choose to act on or ignore (like slapping the bitch next door just coz your wife wants so, annoying some random Sim, using the toilets of neighbours, watching some Sims while sleeping - wich is btw a little sick :-) ).
You can lock in a few of these desires and turn them into objectives to complete as you guide your Sim through everyday life.

Some minus of the game is that you can cheat on your girlfriend/fiancee/wife right in her presence. There's absolutely no reaction from her while my Sim was making out with some other chick. Not to mention that the spouse doesn't react at all if my Sim doesn't spend the night at home. It would have been interesting if there were such conflicts that you could or couldn't
solve. So, my dirty little Sim got out clean :-)

If you get in the neighbours' house and let's say... there's a couple living there... and you approach the chick, you can flirt with her, hug her, kiss her and even get her laid. There is a chance that her guy ignores you, even if he is still in the same room or even if he is sleeping and you get dirty with her in their very own bedroom... wich makes you one sinister freak for doing that :-) hehe!

The most annoying thing about The Sims 3 is the loading time (just a couple of seconds) that occurs while switching from normal view (3rd person) to a zoomed out perspective, the city view (where you can chose your destination).

Overall, The Sims 3 for iPhone is one hell of a game with some ignorable minuses that's definetely worth buying, despite it's high price.

iPhone Art

The iPhone has become a tool for everything.. PERIOD!
The latest thing that proves this is that the cover of the next issue of The New Yorker magazine was drawn entirely on the iPhone, with the Brushes app.
The cover was done by portuguese artist Jorge Colombo. He tells The New York Times that thanks to the iPhone he can work "without having to carry all my pens and brushes and notepads with me." here's a video about how he does it.

..and here's a demo about Brushes:

5 Nice Firefox Add-ons

I just pimped my Firefox with some sweet add-ons.. actually some of them should be implemented in the next FF update, coz the damn IE already has them.

1. Close'n forget - closes current tab and deletes all tracks of it (cookies, history)
2. Hyperwords - this is one good thing featured in IE8 too. After selecting some words/sentence you get some options for that: translate, locate in map, blog, search etc.
3. Next Tab - opens a new tab right next to your current one and not at the end of the tabs, like default.
4. Tab Scope - when hovering mouse pointer on a tab you get a small popup with a preview of it and some options
5. Undo Closed Tabs Button - and this happens quite often for me

Coraline.. Finally!

After Gran Torino and X-Men Origins: Wolverine I also saw Coraline.. after all this is the movie that I wanted to watch in the first place. I got to know about it since a while as beeing the first movie actually shot in 3D and beeing screened using RealD technology. Well.. this technology is really nice and the special glasses you get for watching the movie are also nice, big enough and comfortable enough.

Overall, the movie was nice, although a few days back I got the Coraline audiobook (narrated by Neil Gaiman himself) wich is far better. There were some moments when I noticed some really childish dialogues.. but maybe also because of the thing that the movie was fully translated into romanian (wich btw sucked big time).

I also think that the book really got released in collections dedicated to kids, but despite this, I didn't see a single one in the theatre.

...and NO, 3D effects don't make you dizzy (as some say) unless you have some eye problem.
Go and watch it.. but don't forget about the book or audiobook also!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Finally, I got to watch it :-) A must see movie for all you super-hero-movie-loving fans out there!
One of the best thrillers I've seen this year and it definetely worth waiting for it.

iPhone's "Multitasking" Camera on MacWorld

I was browsing MacWorld.com and some story popped into my eyes: The multitasking camera. I said WOW.. iPhone? Multitasking? Camera? Hm.. still odd.. so I read the crap.
It's just a list of how you can use your iPhone's camera. 'tha fuck!? You can do that stupid point'n click with every camera phone. What is it with you people, you just did some rocket science calculus and realized that you can use a camera for:

  • taking pictures of something and then show that instead of describing it,
  • taking pictures of some pinwall instead of writing down those notes,
  • taking pictures of a business card if you don't have the time to write the details from it,
  • taking pictures of your kids so that you can recognize them in a crowd!!!!!??????

WTF?! What follows? Taking picture of your stupid face to recognize it when you look into a mirror?!

"Reminders: Before you walk away from your car in a big generic parking lot or in an unfamiliar neighborhood, snap a photo of your location so you can easily find your way back. If you’re in a rental car, grab a shot of your make and model so you won’t have to wander around aimlessly, pressing your key fob. A couple of Macworld editors even use their iPhone camera to grab a quick shot of what their kids are wearing before heading out into a crowded place."

What's this supposed to be? "How to be a total moron 101"!?

Train your boss

Amy Sutherland studied how animal trainers interact with their animals and made an analogy. She applied the same principles with her husband, so she wrote What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage.
Same thing goes for your boss: start treating him like an exotic animal, tame him!

1. Ignore your boss's bad behaviour, use the least-reinforcing scenario
2. Any interaction is training
3. Reward the behaviour you want (like poneys get sugar after jumping over some obstacle)

It isn't all about manipulation, it's about HOW you manipulate.
